The Young American
West Coast Shows
Following a six week break and the recording session at Sigma Sound, the fifth US tour commenced on the west coast of the United States. The first half of the set remained as per the Diamond Dogs Tour but the second half featured new songs recorded during the Sigma Sound sessions. “Watch That Man,” “Panic In Detroit” and “Width Of A Circle” were dropped in favour of “Young Americans,” “It’s Gonna Be Me” and “John, I’m Only Dancing (Again).” The musicians for this leg of the tour were: Mike Garson (piano, mellotron), Carlos Alomar (guitar), Earl Slick (lead guitar), Doug Raunch (bass guitar), Greg Enrico (drums), Pablo Rosario (percussion), David Sanborn (alto sax, flute), Richard Grando (baritone sax flute), Michael Kamen (electric piano, moog, oboe), Geoff McCormack, Gui Andrisano, Ava Cherry, Robin Clark, Anthony Hinton, Diane Sumler and Luther Vandross (backing vocals). Rehearsals for the tour took place in Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles and video footage of David recording “Right” can be seen in the Cracked Actor and Five Years documentaries. Terry O’Neill was also present and some his photographs appeared in Melody Maker 12 October 1974.
