The following article was published in The Times Magazine (UK) on 25/02/2012.
Photographer Carl Dunn had trouble shooting David Bowie at this concert, a stop on the Diamond Dogs tour in 1974. “Cameras were forbidden, so my friend snuck in my camera in her handbag,” he says. “I then had to stay in my seat to shoot throughout the concert so no one would see me.” This was the first time that Dunn, a regular photographer of rock concerts, had encountered a moratorium on pictures. He now suspects this was less to do with controlling Bowie's image than with stopping photographers from crowding the front of the stage and blocking the view of paying fans. "I wish I could have moved around more to capture the scope," he says. “It was such a theatrical show with fantastic staging; a real production.” Dunn remembers the audience being awestruck by Bowie, who assumed several incarnations during the show, which included a mime and a Shakespearean scene with a skull. "This was Memphis, the home of Elvis." he says. “We were used to Super Trouper spotlights on the King. We hadn't seen anything like this before." ABIGAIL RADNOR
